World’s smallest glucose sensor approved by FDA

Abbott announced its FreeStyle Libre 3 system is now FDA approved for diabetics ages 4 and up

On May 31, healthcare giant Abbott announced its FreeStyle Libre 3 system is now “cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for people ages 4 and up in the U.S. living with diabetes.”

The continuous glucose monitor (CGM) system features a tiny sensor (see the header image) and this could enable diabetics to enjoy a better quality of life; especially for individuals with active lifestyles.

Here are some of the key specs:

• 1 minute between readings.
• Sensor is smaller and thinner than 2 stacked U.S. pennies. It is currently the “world’s smallest, thinnest glucose sensor” on the market.
• Integrates with a smartphone app and cloud-based data system, “enabling caregivers and healthcare professionals to remotely monitor loved ones and patients as needed.”
• User can wear one given sensor for 14 days.
• In 2020, the system received CE mark in Europe.
