On May 19, market research firm Canalys shared its Q1 2022 smartphone shipments report for North America.

Here are some key points:

  • Shipments totaled 39.0 million units (up 3.7% year on year).
  • Apple grew 19% and reached a 51% market share (in part due to the strong sales of the iPhone 13). Obviously, the high price point didn’t deter consumers too much.
  • Samsung was up 1% and took a 27% market share. The breadth of its product mix could have benefited the brand.
  • Google takes the 5th spot with a 3% market share. Its Pixel line saw a spectacular growth of 380% year on year. Canalys Research Analyst Runar Bjørhovde notes that Google is “building on its wide carrier presence and unprecedented investment in the Pixel brand, both on traditional advertising campaigns and a new NBA partnership.”

It’s unclear if such growth is sustainable due to the current inflation rates in the region.
