Back in May, U.S. retail drugstore giant CVS announced it was developing a new integrated virtual care platform which will give “members access to primary care, on-demand care, chronic condition management, and mental health services virtually, with the option of being seen in-person when needed at an in-network provider”.

Yesterday, during a Q2 earnings call, Amwell, a well-known telemedicine company, revealed that it will work with CVS on “CVS Health Virtual Primary Care”. This is rather surprising since rival firm Teladoc is the exclusive telehealth provider for health insurance company Aetna (acquired by CVS in 2018).

CVS seems adamant to diversify its tech stack with such move and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s definitely a win for Amwell and perhaps a validation of its Converge virtual platform which also has an integrated/inclusive approach to care delivery.

CVS Health Virtual Primary Care is slated to be available for Aetna members in Q1 2023, and for eligible CVS Caremark members during Q2 2023.
